Terms of Service

Most terms of service are written to be survived rather than read. We would rather you actually knew what you were agreeing to, so this page is short, written in ordinary sentences, and says what it means. Using Peaf means accepting it, so it seemed worth making it possible to get through.

• Peaf is a private journal and a private way to stay close to a few people. Nothing you make is public unless you deliberately share it.
• Your content is yours. We do not claim ownership of it. We only get the permission we need to store it and show it to the people you chose.
• Be a decent person with it. No illegal content, no harassing anyone, no uploading things you have no right to.
• You can leave whenever you want, take your data with you, and delete the rest.
• It is one developer’s app. We take reliability seriously, but we cannot promise perfection, and this page says so honestly rather than burying it.

How we handle the data itself is a separate document — the Privacy Policy — and it is part of this agreement.

Peaf is an independent app built and operated by a solo developer based in the United States (“Peaf”, “we”, “us”). It lets you keep a private record of your life — moments, photos, notes, the things you read and watch and eat — and share chosen pieces of it with specific people.

These terms cover the Peaf iOS app, the website at peaf.app including share-link pages, and the backend service that syncs your data. By creating an account or using Peaf, you agree to them. If you do not, please do not use the app.

Peaf is a personal-memories app, not a backup service, a medical device, or a system of record. Keep your own copies of anything you cannot bear to lose — you can export everything at any time. Nothing in Peaf is health, financial or legal advice, including anything an AI feature produces.

• Give us truthful details. Use a real email address you control — it is how we verify you, how we reach you about your account, and how you get back in if you are locked out.
• Keep your credentials safe. Your password, passkey, two-factor codes and device are yours to protect. Tell us at help@peaf.app if you think someone else has access, and we will help you shut it down.
• You are responsible for what happens on your account while it is under your control. If someone else uses it because they got hold of your credentials, that is still activity we will treat as yours until you tell us otherwise.
• One person, one account. Accounts are personal. Do not share yours or hand it to someone else.
• Age. You must be at least 13 years old to use Peaf, and at least 16 if you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom — the same ages given in the Privacy Policy.

Peaf is for your own life and the people you choose to share it with. The short rule is: do not use it to hurt anyone, and do not use it on anyone else’s terms but their own. Concretely, do not:

• upload or share anything illegal, or anything that sexualizes a child in any way;
• harass, threaten, stalk or abuse another person — including through connections, comments, tagging, group posts or share links;
• upload content you have no right to upload: someone else’s copyrighted work, or private photos and information about another person shared without their agreement;
• scrape, crawl, or bulk-extract data from Peaf, or automate access to the service outside the app;
• reverse engineer, decompile or tamper with the app or our servers, probe them for vulnerabilities without asking us first, or try to reach data that is not yours;
• impersonate someone else, or misrepresent who a share link comes from;
• use Peaf to send spam or unsolicited messages, or to interfere with the service working for other people.

If you have found a security problem, we would genuinely like to hear about it. Email help@peaf.app before doing anything with it, and we will not treat good-faith research as a breach of these terms.

You own what you create in Peaf. Your moments, photos, videos, voice notes, captions and journal entries belong to you. We do not claim ownership of any of it, and we do not use it to advertise to you or to train shared AI models — the Privacy Policy explains that in detail.

To actually run the app, we need your permission to handle your content in specific mechanical ways. So you give Peaf a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, copy, back up, transmit, adapt technically (resizing a photo, generating a thumbnail, transcoding a video) and display your content — solely to operate the service for you and to show it to the people you chose to share it with. That is the whole scope. It is not a licence to publish your content, to show it to anyone else, or to use it for anything unrelated to running Peaf.

The licence ends when the content does. Delete a moment, or delete your account, and the permission goes with it — we stop using that content and remove it on the schedule described in the Privacy Policy. The only lag is technical: copies already in a backup age out on the retention schedule, and anything another person already downloaded to their own device is out of our reach, in the same way a screenshot is.

You are responsible for what you upload. By putting content in Peaf you confirm you have the right to, including the right to share photos of other people with the people you send them to. If someone else’s rights are infringed by content on Peaf, email us and we will look into it and remove it where the claim holds up.

The Peaf app, its name, logo, design and code are ours (or our licensors’). Using Peaf gives you a personal, revocable permission to use the app as it is intended — not a right to copy, resell, or build something else out of it.

Peaf is currently free while it is in beta. If we ever introduce paid features, we will say so clearly and in advance, and nothing you already have will be taken away and sold back to you without notice.

We work hard to keep Peaf running and your data safe, and we would rather tell you the truth about the limits than hide behind capital letters.

Peaf is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will never lose data. Features can change, and beta features especially can break.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Peaf is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, or loss of goodwill, arising out of your use of the service. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim relating to Peaf is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or US$50.

Some places do not allow certain warranty exclusions or liability limits — including consumer rights you have under the law of your country. Nothing here removes rights you cannot waive, and nothing here limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Where a limit above is not permitted, it applies only as far as the law allows.

If an account is being used for something in How you may use Peaf — abuse of another person, illegal content, attacks on the service — we may suspend or terminate it. Where it is safe and lawful to do so, we will tell you what happened and give you a way to reply, because we would rather fix a misunderstanding than lose someone. Serious cases, especially those involving harm to another person, we act on immediately.

Suspension does not suspend your privacy rights. Even if we have blocked your account, you can still ask for a copy of your data and still ask us to delete it, exactly as described in the Privacy Policy. We will not hold your memories hostage.

You can stop using Peaf at any time, and you have two ways out. Deactivating puts the account to sleep — you go invisible and everything stops, but nothing is deleted, and signing back in brings it all back. Deleting is permanent: after a seven-day grace period your content and account are erased. Both live in Settings, and both are explained in full under How long we keep it.

Before you go, you can export everything — a ZIP of your data and all your original photos and videos.

We may also end the service itself. If Peaf is ever shut down, we will give you reasonable notice and time to export your data before anything is deleted. The parts of these terms that logically survive — content ownership, the liability limits, and governing law — carry on after your account ends.

If we change these terms, we will update the date at the top of this page. For any change that materially affects your rights or what you are agreeing to, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect, so you have time to read it and decide. Continuing to use Peaf after a change takes effect means you accept the new version; if you do not, you can delete your account and take your data with you.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in California.

If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of the country you live in, or of your right to bring a claim in your local courts.

If part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands. If we do not enforce something straight away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later.
